What’s Cookin’

I plan on re-doing this someday (as well as capturing a better shot of this) but here’s our new Demo board placeholder:

This was heavily referenced from this Demo Board I found on a Google image search, so credit for this pose must go to that TJ’s artist!

My main reason for wanting to redo this really just comes down to my own nitpicky perfectionist tendencies, but it will do for the time being.

Had to do it…

I drew a Kaworu on one of the Kaworu-esque shoe templates I made for the Boston Marathon. *shame*

I’ve made no secret of my inexplicable – if fairly recent – preoccupation/love/infatuation/ with the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It took fifteen years of me avoiding this show before it got me.  And it got me, all right.

I will say this, though:  I’ll never defend EVA.  I’ll never say EVA is the best thing ever and ehrmagerd you need to watch it. I just really enjoy it for the glorious, beautiful mess that it is.

And that sentiment goes for anything else I like.  If I like something I like it.  If you don’t, I don’t give a fuck.  Why does this not seem to gel with most fanpeople?

What’s always bothered me about “fandom” and getting involved in “fan communities”  is that there is a very low tolerance for people liking or disliking things within that genre.  It’s why I stay off of sites like tumblr because any dissension from whatever the majority opinion is automatically makes you a “hater” or it means that you hate the fans of that show or manga, etc.

I don’t get it –  I don’t get how someone can take liking a show to mean that anyone that doesn’t like it sucks, or is a bad person or a hater.  I’d like to think this an affliction of only younger fans, but I’ve been around long enough to know that sadly, it isn’t.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Window Dressing

So I made a shoe template for crew and customers to sign for The Boston Marathon.

It may or may not be modeled after my favorite anime character’s shoe…

And, to fill in spaces, here’s one of several I scribbled on for the window display:

Already that time of year again…!

I played it a little safe this year by using pretty iconic characters, but it’s from experience that I’ve learned this: Better to go with simple, crisp and to the point than with overly complicated and time consuming.

First time drawing Sailor-Whatever, btw. xD

Ripping Myself Off

February blew by me fast this year.  Lack of updates aside, I feel like I’m slowly but surely progressing along with the various projects I’ve had going on inside my head since the beginning of time.

Anywho, it’s March already!!  Why is this exciting?  It means that I have been maintaining this blog for one year!  I’ve somehow trained my procrastinating butt to update at least once a month (a feat for someone like me).  Who knows what this next year will bring, but I will certainly do my best to continue to give this blog the attention it deserves.  It’s been good for me.  Adding to my zen and such.

Ok, onto the scribbles:

So I almost totally ripped myself off from what I did last year, but what was great about this experience was realizing how far I’ve come since then. This was done with almost-dry paint markers on a slippery surface that doesn’t accept paint that well, and I still managed to finish this in 1/3 of the time it took me last year.

If that ain’t progress…

‘Til next time!

Madoka Joe

This could almost count as a “Throwback Thursday” (a day late) but since this is only two years old, I don’t think it qualifies.

This was my first project for Trader Joe’s:

This was a decal posted in the front window over Anime Boston 2012 weekend (our store is directly across from the convention center where it is held each year).

This was drawn entirely in Photoshop over a long weekend. It was a learning experience, to say the least. The food products were reffed off of various photos I had taken, but I completely recolored them by hand.

For the nerds in the audience: The various characters are thinly-veiled versions of Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Nyan Cat, and a something-or-other that looks like a My Neighbor Totoro character.

“Big Game”

I made the mistake of having a filter on when I took the pic so it’s a bit washed-out, but this is the best shot I’ve got at the moment.

“Isa” Sketch

What the heck, here’s one more OC* sketch:

*OC = “Original character”

Scribblin’ New Year’s!

Happy belated New Year’s, old blog ‘o mine!

I haven’t abandoned you, I promise!  I’m drawing more than ever, actually.   Sketching almost every night – notebooks of sketches! Creatively, I’m getting closer to where I want to be.

If things keep going this way there may be some sequential works in the near future!

Anyway, here’s some very rough sketches of an OC of mine:

‘Til next time, blog!

Loveable Lugs

I had time to do a “safety cartoon” the other day.

I think I’ve found my calling in life…
